Rescue Freedom Roast

Dec 6, 2012 By Philip Meech in Rescue Freedom Roast

Caffe Lusso was founded in 1999 as light roast specialists, which was something new and different at the time that the marketplace was beginning to look for.  We saw early on that with this roast style, sourcing coffees directly from farmers was going to be the most critical step for quality in our seed-to-cup process.  Every year since we have come into relationships with new farms pioneering cutting edge techniques in coffee stewardship.  We are now offering a new blend from 3 of our direct-trade farms in Guatemala, Brazil, and Ethiopia that when combined offers a rich, complex taste with absolutely no bitterness.  In fact, its the smoothest blend we’ve ever created.  We’re calling it “Rescue Freedom Roast”, and what makes it even more special is that every pound sold will provide one day of care for a woman or child rescued from human trafficking.

From Seed to Cup

Great example of what we like to call “Seed to Cup”, the relationship  between the grower, roaster, and retailer. In this case farmers from Agros international to Caffe Lusso Coffee Roasters to Green Bean Coffee House. All with the intention of giving you the best cup of coffee possible.

Seattle Barista Competition (TNT)

Nov 13, 2012 By Philip Meech in Seattle Barista Competition (TNT)

Caffe Lusso headed down to Streetbean Espresso October 25th to participate in the monthly TNT (Thursday Night Throwdown). A barista competition started by Espresso Parts, and hosted by Streetbean Espresso. We also managed to offer up some of our great coffee as prizes. We interviewed the founder of Streetbean, the TNT coordinator, and some local barista competitors all to give you a better idea of what Caffe Lusso is involved in whether its events, companys, people, or orginizations. Our goal is to provide people with the best coffee around and in this case to support events like this.

Specialty Coffee

Nov 7, 2012 By Philip Meech in Specialty Coffee

                                                                                    What is Specialty Coffee?

In the broadest possible brushstroke, coffee usually falls into one of two categories:  1) Non-specialty coffee (sometimes called exchange-grade), and 2) Specialty coffee.  Non-specialty grade coffee is typically what you will find in a metal, plastic, or fiberboard can in a grocery store – your basic, generic, commodity-type coffee.   Nothing to write home about, it’s just sort of …. Coffee.  It usually requires cream and sugar to be palatable enough to be allowed past the gatekeeper of your mouth.

Specialty coffee, by contrast, is the top 2% of coffee in the world. It has higher standards of screening for defects, uniformity of size, color, moisture content, and to some extent, more rigid requirements for growing elevation, processing method, and so forth. Professional coffee tasters, or “Cuppers,” will put specialty grade coffee under a more demanding set of evaluation metrics including aroma, body, acidity, and overall taste.  The coffee must be free of any number of cup-faults and taints.  Specialty coffee is hand-picked, which involves considerable more cost of production, but it is the only way to secure the finest green coffee beans on the market.

Caffe Lusso Coffee Roasters sources only Specialty-grade coffee.  It has been that way since we roasted our first bean, and it will continue in the same tradition of quality and the passionate pursuit of delivering our signature taste.
